The lilac-breasted roller bird ( Conracias Caudatus )
Conracias Caudatus, also known as the lilac-breasted roller, is a bird species that belongs to the roller family, Coraciidae. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa and is a vagrant to the southern Arabian Peninsula. The lilac-breasted roller prefers open woodland and savanna and is mostly absent from treeless places. It is usually found alone or in pairs, perching conspicuously at the tops of trees, poles, or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, small birds, and rodents moving about on the ground. The male lilac-breasted roller rises to a fair height during the breeding season, descending in swoops and dives while uttering harsh, discordant cries. The sexes are different in coloration, and juveniles lack the long tail streamers of adults. This species is unofficially considered the national bird of Kenya.
The lilac-breasted roller has a wingspan of over 20 inches and grows to 15 inches in length, including its tail feather. The feathers on these birds have a range of around eight colors. The most common color that the lilac-breasted roller is known for is, of course, lilac. Other colors include blue, violet, brown, black, white, green, and rusty red.
Lilac-breasted rollers primarily eat small insects such as beetles, centipedes, grasshoppers, millipedes, scorpions, snails, spiders, and so on. They have also been known to eat chameleons, slow lizards, and snakes.
The Long-tailed pygmy possum appears to breed twice a year with young being born in January and February and also from late August to early November. The female has 1-4 young at a time and has 4 teats to support these young. The gestation period of C. caudatus is unknown but young leave the pouch when they are about 45 days old and weigh between 5 and 7 grams.
